Campfire Safety Tips

As the weather warms up and as summer rolls around, more families, friends and couples are packing up their gear for a fun filled weekend camping. One of the most essential pieces of an enjoyable camping experience has to be the campfire. Dinner and hot dogs are roasted on them, couples cuddle up by them, kids and family gather around them and tell stories.

Camping can be such a great time and have great memories, however even if you consider yourself a seasoned pro, some basic safety tips and reminders are always good to use.

Even though some wild fires happen by nature such as lightening, many of them are by accident by someone being careless.

Campfire Safety Tips:

  • Check ahead of time with your camping destination so you know what the restrictions are for fires and barbecues if they are allowed.
  • Take time in choosing your location. Look for an existing spot that someone has already used if possible.
  • Keep at least 20 feet away from your camping gear, tent and any other flammable items such as dry timber or leaves.
  • Keep a bucket of water or another type of container handy to extinguish the fire quickly if trouble arises.
  • Circle your fire pit with stones or rocks.
  • Start with a smaller fire with dry grass, leaves and twigs. Once you are comfortable, you can slowly increase the size of your fire with larger branches and tinder.
  • When you are ready, extinguish the fire completely including all glowing ashes. Stir the area with a shovel or stick to ensure all heat is gone and it is out completely.
